Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the complex sentences and the sentence structure exist in the novel, and the translation acceptability in the target language. The data were collected through direct observation method and analyzed with descriptive qualitative method. This study was chosen seeing that English exposure in countries without English as their mother tongue does not guarantee the civilians can use and comprehend English perfectly. seven Intentional complex sentences were found translated into corresponding complex sentence in English version in the novel. Mostly the original author used the subordinator “untuk” and in some parts used “agar”. In the English version, the subordinators chosen is various. The Independent – Dependent has 75% occurrence, whilst Dependent – Independent structure has 25% occurrence. The respondent of questionnaire, in average, 88% of the intentional complex sentences in the translated version considered easily understood. However, Translation Acceptability characteristics theory by Larson (1984) shows 2 sentences lacking of it.
