Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of deixis found in the Paper Town novel by John Green, and to analyze the function of each type of the deixis. This study utilized a qualitative research method to analyze the deixis observed in the conversations of the characters in the novel, and used a description in the data to describe the types of deixis and their functions. This study applied theory from Levinson (1983) theory on deixis and the theory from Halliday and Hasan (1985) theory of context situation to analyze the contextual aspects of the situations portrayed in the novel. The findings of the data from deixis are 70 data, divided into 22 data of Person Deixis, 15 data of Place Deixis, 27 data of Time Deixis, 2 data of Discourse Deixis and 4 data of Social Deixis. From the fifth types of deixis, the Discourse Deixis is least and the type Time Deixis is the dominant data in Paper Town novel utterances. Time deixis has function to show the time in (past, present, and future) the conversation occurred, and address an event happening at the moment.
