An Analysis of Taboo Words in Don’t Breathe 2 Movie

This research aims to explore the types and functions of taboo words in the film Don't Breathe 2 movie. The researcher employed observation method and note taking technique to collecting the data. In analyzing the data, this research adopted a mixed method approach (Creswell & Tashakkori, 2007). The research also encompasses a linguistic and contextual approach towards the utilization of these words in different situations and by various characters throughout the film. The result of this research was presented using combination of formal and informal methods. This study found out two types of taboo word and three functions that appeared in the dialogue of the movie. Obscenity and epithet are the types of taboo words founded while to show contempt, to be provocative and to draw attentions to oneself are the functions. The type with the highest number of occurrences is obscenity, followed epithet type, while to draw attentions and to be provocative has the same occurrences of the taboo words functions, and then the least number of occurrences is to show contempt.
