Abstract
Reading is one of the basic skills that students need when learning English and all of the students should master it. This study aims to figure out the improvement of reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Kuta Utara through Jigsaw combined with pictures. The subjects were the eighthgrade students of SMPN 1 Kuta Utara in the academic year 2023/2024. There were 34 students which consisted of 19 males and 15 females. The design was a classroom action research design. The research was conducted by implementing Jigsaw in two cycles. The data was collected by using tests and questionnaires. The researcher used qualitative and quantitative data analysis to analyze the data obtained. The result showed that Jigsaw combined with pictures can improve the students’ reading comprehension, especially in recount text. This can be seen in the increase in students’ average scores before and after the implementation of the action through pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 63.67 which increased to 76.17 in post-test I and again to 86.02 in post-test II. In addition, the questionnaire showed that the subjects’ reactions to the implementation of Jigsaw combined with pictures during the teaching and learning process were positive. In summary, the study showed that reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Kuta Utara in the academic year 2023/2024 can be improved through Jigsaw combined with pictures.
