Code Switching Found in Cinta di Dalam Gelas Novel by Andrea Hirata

A phenomenon of combining two languages in communication process often occurred in bilingual community that is called code switching. This study concerned with code switching used by Andrea Hirata in his utterance in Cinta di Dalam Gelas novel. This study is aimed to answer the research problems, which to find out the types of code switching are used in Cinta di Dalam Gelas novel by Andrea Hita, and to find out the reasons that motivate the author uses the code switching found in Cinta di Dalam Gelas novel. Descriptive qualitative method was used for this study for analyzing the collected data from 45 chapter and 264 pages. The method was applied in order to give clear description on the data according to theory proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987) to classify the types of code switching and theory by Hoffman (1991) to analyze the reasons of code-switching. The result of this study shows that all types of code-switching and reasons of codeswitching were found. First, the three types of code-switching found, are namely tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching, in which the most dominant switching is intra- sentential. Second, five reasons of codeswitching were found, namely talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, showing empathic about something, repetition used for clarification, and intention for clarifying the speech content for interlocutor. The most dominant reason found is talking about a particular topic.
