Abstract
This research aims to analyze the types and meanings of illocutionary acts within the movie "The Menu," directed by Mark Mylod. The collected data was analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method using the theories put forward by Searle's (1976) theory to categorize illocutionary acts and Leech's (1974) theory to interpret meanings. This research found 44 utterances containing types of illocutionary acts, such as assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. Assertiveness is the utterance most frequently uttered by the characters in the film The Menu. The frequency of assertiveness was 18 utterances, or 40%. Followed by directive, which appears in 15 utterances (36%), Commissive, which appears in 5 utterances (11%), and expressive, which appears in 6 utterances (13%). The second main aspect, after the type of illocutionary act, is analyzing meaning. All the data from the film "The Menu" that had been analyzed contained connotative and denotative meanings. This research used the theories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1989) to show how the context of the situation supported the intended meaning of the utterance. The intended meaning could be easily found in the context of the situation.
