Abstract

Metaphor is a figurative language often found in literary works, especially novels. It contained unique cultural elements, which make metaphors hard to understand and translate. This study aims to identify the English metaphors are found in the novel The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber, and to analyze the translation strategies are applied by translator in rendering the English metaphors into Indonesian metaphors. Data were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive method with the theory from Newmark (1988) regarding types and translation strategies of metaphor. This study revealed that from the 130 data obtained, five types of metaphors discovered and seven translation strategies of metaphor were used by translators to convey the metaphors in the novel The Ballad of Never After from English to Indonesian. Adapted metaphors are considered to be the most employed with 69 data (53,1%), which implies that authors often modify original expressions to integrate metaphors that fit the fantastical settings, characters, and themes present in young adult fantasy novels. Furthermore, the strategy Reproducing the Same Image in the TL is the most frequently used by the translator with occurence 53 data (41%). It indicates the translator's preference for maintaining the original metaphorical image in the target language, ensuring consistency and preserving the author's intended meaning. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how metaphor is used and translated in the context of young adult fantasy literature. This emphasizes the importance of adapting metaphors to fit the unique narrative elements of the genre, while also recognizing the important role of translators in conveying those metaphors faithfully to diverse audiences.
