Abstract

Reading and comprehension cannot be separated. Reading without understanding the actual meaning from the text it will make the readers not get any information that contain in the text. The result of pre-test showed that the most of subjects faced problem in reading comprehension. The subjects under study had difficulty in identifying general information, specific information, textual meaning and textual reference of the text. The objective of the present study was to find out whether or not reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 4 Kuta Utara in academic year 2023/2024 can be improved through Numbered Heads Together. Therefore, to achieve the objective of the present study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research. Then, the researcher administered the research instruments: pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The students’ mean scores had significant improvements from the pre-test was 59.37 to 71.87 in cycle I and 82.81 in cycle II. Furthermore, to collect the additional supporting data, the researcher administered the questionnaire at the end of cycle II. It showed that the students’ responses positively could be seen that the result of the questionnaire showed the percentage of the 52.32% strongly agreed, 41.86% agreed, 5.37% undecided, 0.43% disagreed and 0% strongly agreed. Based on the results, of this study it could be concluded that reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 4 Kuta Utara in academic year 2023/2024 can be improved through Numbered Heads Together.
