Abstract

Code switching is the main concern of analysis in this research from Melaney
Ricardo’s selected videos. This research primarily purposes to discover the types
and analyze the reasons of code switching in the data. They were selected from
three videos of Melaney Ricardo in her YouTube channel. In conducting the
research, the data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. Romaine’s theory
(1995) and Hoffman (1991) also utilized to discover the types and reasons of code
switching. There were 85 data found in the research which consist of various types
of code switching, include tag switching occurs in 10 data (11,8%), inter-sentential
switching happens in 29 data (34,1%), and intra-sentential switching which occurs
in 46 data (54,1%), is the most prominent type of code switching. Meanwhile, the
selected video on YouTube channel of Melaney Ricardo indicates seven reasons
that caused the phenomena of code switching, including talking about a particular
topic which occurs 37 data (43,6%), quoting somebody else only 2 data (2,3%),
being emphatic about something in 4 data (4,8%), interjection occurs in 5 data
(5,9%), repetition used for clarification got 12 data (14,1%), expressing group
identity with 3 data (3,5%), and clarifying the speech content for interlocutor with
the occurrence of 22 data (25,8%). The most common reason for code switching is
talking about a certain topic, which amount 37 data (43,6%).
