Abstract

Violating maxim often appears in any conversation, not to mention the
conversation in a movie. This study focuses on identifying the types of
conversational maxims violation and the intended meaning by the characters in
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” movie. This study used Grice’s
theory of Cooperative Principle and also supported theory by Cutting (2002) to
analyze the types of conversational maxims violation. Meanwhile, the intended
meaning behind the utterance were analyzed by the theory of implicature by Grice
(1975) and the theory of Context of Situation by Hymes (1974). This study
conducted a qualitative method where the data were collected by using
observation method. The source of the data was the conversation in the “ShangChi and the Legend of Ten Rings” movie. The results showed that all types of
maxim were violated and there were 40 maxim violations found in this study.
Those consist of 10 data violating the maxim of quantity, 6 data violating the
maxim of quality, 16 data violating the maxim of relevance, and 8 data violating
the maxim of manner. The result of the analysis presented that the most dominant
type of violation maxim is the violation maxim of relevance and there are some
intended meanings behind the utterances that violate the maxim.
