POLITENESS PRINCIPLE APPLIED BY THE CHRACTERS IN EMMA 2020 MOVIE

This study entitled “Politeness Principle Applied by the Characters in
Emma 2020 Movie”. It consisted of three objectives are: (1) To analyze the types
of politeness maxim used in Emma 2020 movie. (2) To identify the types of
politeness scaled found in Emma 2020 movie, (3) This study concerned on
analyzing the types of politeness strategies applied by the movie characters in
Emma 2020 movie. To conduct the analysis, this study used the theory that
proposed by Leech (1983) to find out the types of politeness maxim and
politeness scale. The theory that proposed by Brown & Gilman (1960) also used
to conduct the further analysis about the politeness scale. In addition, the theory of
politeness strategies that proposed by Brown & Levinson (1987) then used to
analyze the types of politeness strategies applied by the movie characters in Emma
2020 movie. According to the result, the whole types of politeness maxim,
politeness scale and politeness strategies found with the varieties of occurrence
presented in formal method by using the table percentage followed by the further
explanation in descriptive paragraph. There are 4% of tact maxim, 13% of
modesty maxim, 15% of agreement maxim, 22% of approbation maxim, 22% of
sympathy maxim and 24% of generosity maxim which identified as the politeness
maxim that mostly performed. Moreover, there are 4% of indirectness scale, 7%
of authority scale, 7% of optionality scale, 31 % of social distance scales and 50%
of cost-benefit scales that indicated as the scale that mostly found, meanwhile for
the politeness strategies, the positive politeness strategy is the strategy that
extremely applied with 62% occurrence than negative politeness strategies only
with 38% occurrence. Based the result found, some types of politeness maxim and
politeness scale were combined with other type to emphasize the courtesy applied
by the movie characters.
