AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING IN PURNNAYASA’S INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS

This study focuses on the analysis of code switching in the Purnnayasa Instagram
caption. Recently, Indonesians communicated with others using more than one
language. They combine their languages accidentally, either orally or in writing.
Hence, this study aims to identify the types and functions of code-switching in
Purnayasa Instagram captions. It was found 52 captions that show the phenomenon
of code switching. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research.
The types and functions of code switching were analysed by theory from Appel
and Muysken (1987) and also supported by theory from Poplack (1980). There are
three types of code switching that have been found: tag switching, inter-sentential
switching, and the last one, intra-sentential switching. The result from the data
presented that intra-sentential switching was the highest occurrence of codeswitching found on the Instagram caption by Purnnayasa. It was found 29 data.
Followed by inter-sentential switching was found for about 20 data. Meanwhile,
the lowest data was tag switching with 3 data. Moreover, according to Appel and
Muysken (1987), there are six functions of code-switching: referential function,
directive function, expressive function, phatic function, metalinguistic function,
and poetic function. The most common function found in this study is the
referential function, which was found in 17 data, followed by the phatic function,
which was found in 13 data, the expressive function, which was found 11 times,
the metalinguistic function, which was found 5 times, and the last function, the
poetic function, which was found in 1 data.
