Abstract

This undergraduate thesis entitled Indonesian-English Code-Switching
Analysis in “Kisah Untuk Dinda” Novel has two aims; they are to analyze the
types of code-switching and the Reasons of code-switching found in the novel.
The data source used in this study was a novel entitled Kisah Untuk Dinda. This
study uses qualitative and quantitative method to conduct a clear and wellorganized description of the problem. The data were collected by applying the
types of code switching theory by Poplack (1980) and theory of reasons code
switching by Hofmann (1991). The total data in this study were 135 data, there
were 14,08% tag switching, 3,70% inter-sentential, and 82,22% intra-sentential
switching. As the result, intra-sentential switching was the most data found.
Meanwhile, inter-sentential switching was the least. The result shows all the reasons of code-switching code based on Hofmann (1991) are occured in the novel.
From 135 data, found seven reasons of code-switching.26,66% code-switching
due to talking about particular topic, 0,74% code-switching due to quoting somebody else, 21,48% code-switching due to being emphatic about something, 8,14%
code-switching due to interjection, 0,74% code-switching due to repetition use for
clarification, 41,50% code-switching due to intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, and 0,74% expressing group identity. The intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor as the dominant reason from the data
with 49, 62%. On the contrary, code- switching due to quoting somebody else
,repetition use for clarification, and expressing group identity came out as the
lowest percentage with only 1 data were found in the novel.
