Abstract

This study focused on the types of illocutionary acts mentioned in the DW
News YouTube interview "Ukraine War: Does Putin Want Total Devastation?" The
purposes of the study were to identify the types of illocutionary acts and the
meaning of the utterances. This study used theories by Searle (1979) and the theory
by Leech (1981). The data were taken from utterances between the interviewer and
the interviewee found in an interview entitled "Ukraine War: Does Putin Want Total
Devastation?" on DW News Youtube Channel. The data were collected by
observation method which watching the news comprehensively. The data were
analyzed using descriptive qualitative method and presented using formal and
informal methods. Based on the result of the data analysis related to the types of
illocutionary acts, there were 48 data found as follow: 21 data of assertives, 19
directives, 4 expressives, and 4 commissives. The most dominant type of
illocutionary act found was assertive, since the speaker mostly stated, concluded
and gave their opinion about what they believed. Moreover, the finding of the
meaning of illocutionary acts were 33 data of conceptual meaning, 13 data of
connotative meaning, 4 of affective meaning, and 8 data of thematic meaning. The
most dominant sort of meaning was conceptual, and speakers tend to explain it
literally to make their point clearly understood by the audience.
