Abstract
This study intended to analyze figurative languages found in Five Second of Summer Song
in 5SOS5 album. The objectives of this research were to find out the types and functions of
figurative languages found in Five Second of Summer’s Song in 5SOS5 album. There are
two theories used in this research, the first theory proposed by Knickerbocker and
Reninger (1963) in the book Interpreting Literature to find out types of figurative
languages found in Five Second of Summer’s Song in 5SOS5 album, and the second theory
proposed by Perrine (1969) in the book Sound and Sense: An Introduction to Poetry to find
out the function of figurative languages used in Five Second of Summer’s Song in 5SOS5
album. The data were collected by listening to the songs, reading the song lyric, underling,
classifying the lyrics, and taking note of which are contains figurative language. The data
were analyzed descriptively by using qualitative and quantitative methods. The song writer
has high imaginative and intelligent in writing the song into many types of figurative
language. There were seven types of figurative language found in Five Second of
Summer’s Song in 5SOS5 album, namely 6 data of simile (19,4%), 1 datum of metaphor
(3,2%), 9 data of personification (29,1%), 12 data of hyperbole (38,7%), 1 datum of
metonymy (3,2%), l datum of irony (3,2%), and 1 datum of allusion (3,2%). Hyperbole
was the most figurative languages found in Five Second of Summer’s Song in 5SOS5
Album with the total 12 data. There were four functions of figurative language found,
namely imaginative pleasure, additional imagery, emotional intensity, and means of
concentration.
