AN ANALYSIS OF IDIOMATIC EXPRESSION IN A MOVIE BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

This study aims to analyze the types and definitions of idioms used in the Bohemian Rhapsody film. The purpose of this study is to find out the types of idioms and their meanings contained in the Bohemian Rhapsody film. There are two theories used in this study. The first theory uses the theory of idiom types. Odell & McMcarthy (2010) use a book entitled English Idioms in Use to determine the types of idioms, and the second theory put forward by Leech (1981) is entitled Semantic: The Study of Meaning is used to discover the meaning of the types of figurative language found in the film Bohemian Rhapsody. The method used in data collection is the observation method, and there are several steps in data collection, including reading the Bohemian Rhapsody film script, then recording and classifying phrases and sentences that contain idioms. This study analyzed the data descriptively using qualitative methods. After analyzing the sentences, Based on the findings of the analysis, Bohemian Rhapsody contains the following idioms: 4 similes (16%), 2 binomials (8%), 5 proverbs (20%), 3 euphemisms (12%), 5 clichés (20%), and 6 fixed statements (48%). For the types of meanings of idiomatic expressions, there are 8 connotative meanings (32%), 10 conceptual meanings (40%), 6 affective meanings (24%), and 1 reflected meaning (4%)
