AN ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGE FUNCTION IN UTTERANCES PRODUCED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN “THE WOLF OF WALL STREET” MOVIE

This study focused on the analysis the function of language and the context of the situation in the speech produced by the main character of the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. The data of this study were taken from the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. The Wolf of Wall Street tells the true story of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio). The data were collected from the utterance uttered by the main character. The descriptive qualitative method was used to analyse the data in this study. The function of language was analysed using Jakobson (1990) theory and the context of the situations were analysed based on Halliday and Hasan (1985) theory. It was found that there were 32 data contains language function. Based on the theory used, there were six functions of language found in the data: referential function, emotive function, poetic function, conative function, phatic function and metalingual function.
