AN ANALYSIS OF LIBERAL FEMINISM PORTRAYED BY THE FEMALE CHARACTERS OF RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON MOVIE

This study focused on analyzing the characteristic of female characters describe and how the characteristic of female characters portrayed liberal feminism in the movie Raya and the Last Dragon. This study used observation method by watching the movie repeatedly to observe the characteristic of female characters and how the characteristic of the female characters portrayed liberal feminism. Descriptive study in textual analysis was applied to analyze conversation and picture of the female characters. The data in this study were analyzed by using two main theories, namely theory of characterization proposed by Murphy (1972) and theory of Feminism proposed by Tong (2009). In addition, one supporting theory is also used, namely theory of Sex-Trait Stereotypes proposed by Williams and Best (1982). The method applied in presenting the data were formal and informal method using 14 data samples found in the data. The result shows that the female characters portrayed liberal feminism in the movie by showing their masculine sides in order to achieving their original goal of collecting dragon gem and returning Kumandra to its original state. In addition, they also get recognition from the entire Kumandra community as female warriors who are brave, strong, tough, responsible and reliable.
