SELF-DEFENSE MECHANISM FACED BY THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN ALL IS LOST MOVIE

This study aims to investigate the self-defense mechanisms and elements of the personality structure portrayed by the characters in the movie All Is Lost. Drawing on Freud's theory (1890) as discussed in Minderop (2010), a qualitative approach was employed to analyze data derived from the movie. The film All Is Lost served as the primary data source. The method of data collection involved watching the movie, classifying the data based on selfdefense mechanisms, and taking notes of relevant information. Through this process, a total of 20 instances of self-defense mechanisms and elements of the personality structure were identified and categorized. The observed self-defense mechanisms included repression (5 instances), projection (4 instances), displacement (3 instances), rationalization (3 instances), and regression (5 instances). Additionally, elements of the personality structure, such as the id (2 instances), ego (14 instances), and superego (4 instances), were also identified. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the psychological dynamics and the mechanisms exhibited by the characters in the film, providing insights into their behavior and motivations.
