Abstract
This study focuses on the analysis of the language style in the "Keeping Mum” movie. This study aims to identify the types and to analyse the factor influencing the choice of language style in the “Keeping Mum” movie. The data of this study were taken from the movie entitled “Keeping Mum.” Keeping Mum is a 2005 British black comedy film co written and directed by Niall Johnson. The data were collected by direct observation. The descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data in this study. The types of language style were analyzed using Joos’(1967) theory, and the factor influencing the choice of language style was analyzed using the theory of Holmes (1992. The result shows that there are there five types of language styles found, such as frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate styles. Based on Holmes (1992) theory there were four factors in choosing language style variation on the data, such as: participant, setting, topic, and function. The intimate style is the most types of language style found. These findings show that language style is becoming increasingly common and may be used as a suitable learning medium. This research provides the readers with insight into the use of language style, especially on movie.
