Abstract
The title of this study “An Analysis of Directive Speech Acts Found in Doctor Strange (2016) Movie”. This study focused on classifying the type of illocutionary acts found in the movie and the function of the characters used illocutionary act. The study applied the theory from Searle and Vanderveken (1985) about the classification of Illocutionary Act and theory of Context of Situation by Halliday and Hasan (1989). The method applied in collecting the data was observation method. The data was collected from the conversation interaction among the character in the Doctor Strange (2016) Movie and the analysis used qualitative method. The method applied in presenting the data were formal and informal method using 26 samples found in the data. Illocutionary acts found were divided into 13 categories, namely; asking, telling, urging, commanding, requesting, begging, advising, order, permitting, requiring and demanding, recommending, forbidding and prohibiting, and warning. The data were analyzed to find the types of illocutionary acts and the function of the character used illocutionary acts. The researcher found that telling and urging illocutionary act was the most used in the Doctor Strange (2016) Movie. Meanwhile, praying became the least because the characters does not used it in the movie. The function of the character used directive speech act were to tell the other to do something whether by using their power, authority or status. Based on the perlocutionary effect that showed by the hearer, the directive speech act that perform by the characters was successful enough.
