IMPROVING SPEAKING SKILL OF THE EIGHTHGRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 3 SEMARAPURA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023 THROUGH ESA COMBINED WITH FLASHCARD

Speaking is one of the important language skills among reading, listening, and writing. By mastering speaking skill, someone can communicate well to convey the information they have to others. However, there are several problems experienced by students in learning English, including students’ comprehension, grammatical error, and fluency. The present research objective was mainly intended to find out whether speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Semarapura in academic year 2022/2023 could be improved through ESA combined with flashcard. The present study used the classroom action research design that was conducted in two cycles. The required data were collected by administering research instruments: monologue performance tests and a structured questionnaire. After the cyclical research processes, it was found that ESA combined with flashcard was appropriate teaching technique to improve the subjects’ speaking skill, especially in constructing and performing a short descriptive monologue. It could be seen from the results of the pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2, which showed significant improvement in the subjects’ speaking skill. Furthermore, it was supported by the structured questionnaire, which showed positive responses to the implementation of ESA combined with flashcard. It can be concluded that speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Semarapura in academic year 2022/2023 could be improved by implementing ESA combined with flashcard.
