THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION OF THE EIGHTH- GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP (SLUB) SARASWATI 1 DENPASAR IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023

This research was focused on the correlation of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in the academic year 2022/2023. Vocabulary is one of several things that plays important role in reading comprehension. The samples were the eighth-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2022/2023. There were 37 students over 281 taken as the samples of this study that were determined by using a cluster sampling technique. There were 2 research instruments used to measure their vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, namely cloze task to measure vocabulary mastery and short answer task to measure reading comprehension. The collected data were analyzed by using normality, homogeneity, hypothesis testing using Pearson product moment and t-test. The results of the data analysis showed that the normality value for vocabulary test was 0.062 and reading comprehension test was 0.076. It meant that the data were nomal, homogeneity value was 0.073. It meant that the data were homogeneous. Furthermore, r value was 0.675, meaning that there was a correlation. It indicated that there was a sufficient correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension since it was ranked in the scale of r interpretation score between 0.60 - 0.799. Meanwhile t-counted was found 5.220, meaning that there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. Thus, the hypothesis was accepted
