Abstract
The aims of this study are to find out the types of slang words and to analyze the process of creating slang words found in “The Color Purple” novel. The novel entitled “The Color Purple” was used as the data source since there were many slang words used by the characters in this novel. The novel is about social issue and feminism. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Observation method was used in collecting the data in this study were taken from the script and analyzed by applying the theory of types of slang words proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007) who classifiedslang words into primary and secondary, The theory proposed by Matiello (2008) was used to analyze the process of creating slang found in the novel. The result of the study shows there are 45 data of slang words found in the “The Color Purple” novel. There were 34 words identified as primary slangs and 11 data of secondary slangs. Moreover, there are five word formations of creating slang found, such as; compounding, blending, clipping, variation and original. In general, the conclusion is that slang words are often found in literary works that can be used as research material.
