Abstract

This study focused on greeting utterance produced by each character in the Peacemaker movie series and concerns with the illocutionary acts that occur in the character’s utterance. It is aimed (1) to find out the types of illocutionary act in the Peacemaker movie series, and (2) to analyze the meaning of the illocutionary act produced by the characters in the movie series. This study used descriptive qualitative method in analysing the types and the function of illocutionary acts as proposed by theory from Searle’s (1979). The result of this study showed that there are 34 data of illocutionary acts found in each greetings utterance of the characters in the movie series. There are five types of illocutionary acts found in the data source, namely: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. From five types of illocutionary acts, directive is the most types used by the characters, there are 18 data of directive found in this movie series, and declarative was rarely used in this movie, it only consists of 1 greeting utterance that contained of declarative. The study concludes that the speaker has reason when they need someone to do the action through their greeting utterance. People are not only producing the greeting utterance to communicate but from the greeting utterance also has function they want to deliver to the hearer in purpose to understand the meaning of the greetings itself in direct form or indirect form.
