Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing figurative language in novel entitled “Love and a Promise”. The result of this analysis have assumed 2 research questions: 1. What are the types of figurative language that found in the novel entitled “Love and a Promise”? 2. What are the meanings of figurative languages found in the novel entitled “Love and a Promise”? The study used descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The results of this analysis demonstrate that there are 8 of similes, 5 of metaphors, 9 of personifications, 11 of hyperbole, 2 of metonymy, 12 of synecdoche, 2 of epithet, 2 of paradox, and also 2 of paronomasia that found in this novel. There are seven meanings of figurative language found in the novel entitled “Love and a Promise”, such as conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, collocative meaning, affective meaning, social meaning, reflective meaning, and thematic meaning. Based on the result of analysis, it can be conclude that the types of figurative languages that dominant used in this novel is synecdoche. The author uses the type of figurative language synecdoche in the novel to provide a clearer imagery of the situation by put some words that have whole meaning in the story. The connotative meaning that frequently used in this novel showed the story contains additional meanings, certain feelings, and taste values.
