Abstract
The purpose of this research is to present the figurative language used in song lyrics by Jamie Miller. There are 12 songs has analyzed such as, “Here’s Your Perfect”, “Last Calls”, “It Is What It Is”, “I Lost Myself In Loving You”, “Wishes”, “Running Out Of Roses”, “Hold You ‘Til We’re Old”, “Longer”, “City That Never Sleep”, “Home By Midnight”, “Over You”, “Onto Something”. The thesis described type of figurative language and meaning from Jamie Miller’s song lyrics. The result of the research showed that from 12 songs, there are 27 lyrics containing figurative language. Those 27 lyrics comprise 6 types of figurative languages. They are personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, paradox and understatement. The percentage of each type of figurative language found in Jamie Miller’s song lyrics was 11,1% personification, 7,4% metaphor, 11,1% simile, 59,2% hyperbole, 3,7% paradox, 7,4% apostrophe. Based on the result of the study, the most frequently used is hyperbole because so many words that exaggerated the meanings. This research highly expected to give contribution to the reader or the next researcher to know about type of figurative language, meaning of figurative language, and to identify figurative language easier.
