Abstract

This study concerns the basic sentence patterns that occur in the “Peter Pan” novel by J. M. Barrie. The study aims to analyse the types of sentence patterns and the constituent structure of the simple sentence which was constructed in the “Peter Pan” novel. In order to answer the research question, this research used descriptive qualitative method. The steps in taking and collecting the data were reading the novel, underlining the simple sentences, and classifying into the types of sentence patterns. The researcher applied the theory of Quirk et al (1973) to analyse the types of sentence patterns found in the novel. The researcher also applied the theory of Brown and Miller (1991) to represent the tree diagram and constituent structures. Based on the results, the researcher found that there were 7 basic sentence patterns which were used in the “Peter Pan” novel by J. M. Barrie. The researcher found 38 patterns S-V, 42 patterns S-V-C, 20 patterns S-V-A, 56 patterns S-V-O, 3 patterns S-V-O-C, 16 patterns S-V-O-A, and 7 patterns S-V-O-O. The pattern which was frequently used was pattern S-V-O which were 56 sentences used in the “Peter Pan” novel. The constituent structures are found based on the sentence patterns of the novel.
