Abstract

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder. One of schizophrenia treatment were treated using antipsychotic medication. Anti-psychotic drugs are the first therapy that effectively treat schizophrenia, which is chlorpromazine, a typical antipsychotic group. Side effects from the use of chlorpromazine were dizziness, headache, blurred vision, trembling and hyposalivation. Objectives: The aim of this study was to prove the effect of antipsychotic drugs on salivary pH in patients with schizophrenia in the RSJ. Methods: The method used in this study was an experimental research study with 10 subjects. The treatment is divided into 30 minutes groups treatment and 75 minutes and one control group. In the treatment group the measurement of the salivary pH was taken after consuming chlorpromazine at minute 30 and 75, in the control group the measurement of the salivary pH was before consuming chlorpromazine. Results: These results indicate a significant difference between the control group and 30 minutes group (p <0.05), which showed a decrease in salivary pH. There are significant differences between the control group and 75 minutes (p <0.05), which showed a decrease in salivary pH. There was no significant difference between the 30th minute and the 75th minute (p <0.05), which showed an increase in the pH of saliva. Conclusion: Chlorpromazine may lower the pH of saliva in schizophrenics because of action mechanism of chlorpromazine that interfere with the autonomic nerves causing an inability of buffer to suppress acidity.
