Abstract
This research had been conducted in order to analyze five types and function of illocutionary act based on the theory proposed by Searle (1979) and Leech (1983). To complete this thesis, a qualitative research method was applied. In analyzing the data, the writer used two theories. The first theory comes from Searle (1979), it is used to answer the first problem of the study, which is to categorize the utterances of the main character as illocutionary act. The second theory comes from Leech (1983), it is used to answer the second problem of the study, which is to determine the function of illocutionary act of the main character’s utterances. The writer used table to show the occurrence of types of illocutionary act found in the movie. The result of this analysis shows that there are only 4 types of illocutionary act found in Nightbooks movie. Based on the data, directives have the highest frequency of occurrence or 26 utterances (36.61%). It is followed by expressive with the occurrences of 17 utterances (23.95%), representative with the occurrences of 16 utterances (22.53%), and commissives with the occurrences of 12 utterances (16.91%). Moreover, the function of illocutionary act used by the main character in Nightbooks movie based on the result found 3 functions of illocutionary act. There are competitive, convivial, and collaborative. The function of illocutionary act found the most in this category was competitive.
