AN ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGE STYLE USED IN PURPLE HEARTS MOVIE

This study was conducted to find out the types of language style and the social factors that affects all characters in using language style. The data were taken from Purple Hearts movie in Netflix. This study used theory from Joos (1967) to analyze language style found in Purple Hearts movie and theory from Holmes (1992) to analyze the factor that affects all characters speak in different style in Purple Hearts movie. The data were collected by watching the movie and reading the movie script. The result shows that there are 42 data from all character in Purple Hearts movie. They are 1 data on frozen style (2,38%), 8 data on formal style (19,06%), 6 data on consultative style (14,28%), 14 data on casual style (33,33%) and 13 data on intimate style (30,95%). The most language style used by all characters occur in casual style. There are four social factors that causes different language style that used all character in Purple Hearts movie. They are participants, setting, topic and function. And the most dominant factor that caused all characters to use different language style is the participants. This study found that the participant factors affected all characters to use formal style, consultative style, casual style, intimate style, and frozen style. This study found that the setting factor affected all characters to use casual style, intimate style, and frozen style. The topic factor affected all characters to use consultative style and intimate style. Lastly, the function factor affected all characters to use formal style, casual style, intimate style, consultative style.
