Abstract

Background: Dental practice frequently causes a trauma or an injury in oral cavity soft tissues after dental treatment, one of them is an incision injury on oral cavity soft tissues. Injury will be followed by wound healing process physiologically. The wound will heal faster if the area around the wound in a sterile condition. Wound healing also affected by wound cleanliness and consumption of builder substances on a sufficient level. Acceleration of wound healing can be caused by collagen synthesis enhancement in proliferation phase which aims to bind the damaged tissue. Papaya is a plant that commonly found in Indonesia and has many functions. Papaya leaf contains flavonoids, saponin, alkaloid, papain, and tannin that work together with different mechanism in stimulating collagen synthesis in wound healing process. Purpose: The aim of this study is to know the optimal concentration of papaya (Carica papaya) leaf extract gel on the collagen density of gingival incision wound healing in guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). Methods: The type of this study is in vivo laboratory experiment with post test only control group using 24 male guinea pigs that divided into four treatment groups, such as application of papaya leaf extract gel concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and application of CMC-Na 2% gel as a control group. Results: The result of this study shows that the average collagen density after being treated with papaya leaf extract gel 25%, 50%, and 75% sequentially is 22.07%, 26.58%, and 53.60%.All groups show significant difference result (ρ<0.05) in One Way Anova Test. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is papaya leaf extract gel concentration of 75% is more effective in collagen density enhancement than concentration of 50% and 25%.
