Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the four important skills in English that must be mastered. In fact, most of the students in Junior High School faced problems in speaking skill. This study aims to determine the extent to which students' speaking skills at SMPN 2 Ubud for the 2022/2023 school year can be improved through role-play techniques. To achieve the objectives of this study, this study consisted of pre-test, post-test and questionnaires. From the research that has been carried out, the average student ability results are 49.62. Then the researcher applied the role-play technique to improve students' abilities. The post-test was given at the end of each cycle and the average student score was 71.46 in post-test 1 and 87.43 in post-test 2. From these data role-play has an effect on improving students' speaking skills. Apart from that, to collect additional data, the researcher gave a questionnaire at the end of cycle 2. This questionnaire proved that the role-play technique could improve students' speaking skills in class VIII at SMPN2 Ubud in the 2022/2023 school year and the subjects also responded positively.
