Abstract

Reading is one of the four language skills which holds a prominent role of the language mastery. It is mostly focused on understanding meaning of passages or paragraph. The present study was intended to know whether or not reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP PGRI 2 Denpasar in academic year 2022/2023 could be improved through Herringbone. The subjects were 40 students. There were still many problems for students in reading comprehension. The students were difficult in identifying general information, identifying specific information, textual meaning, and textual reference. Moreover, the research objective was to know whether or not reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP PGRI 2 Denpasar can be improved through herringbone technique. Thus, to achieve the objective, the researcher conducted classroom action research, which was done in two cycles. The research instrument, tests and questionnaire, were administering to collect the required data. The data were then analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-test, which showed there were significant improvements of the subjects’ mean scores from the pre-test to posttests. As the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered at the end of the last cycle and the results showed positive responses on the implementation of herringbone. Based on the results of the research instruments, it could be concluded that reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP PGRI 2 Denpasar can be improved through herringbone technique.
