Abstract

The purpose of the present study which made use correlational research design was to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Payangan in academic year 2022/2023. The samples of this research consisted of 64 students from 253 population of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Payangan which were chosen by one of probability sampling technique namely cluster random sampling. In this research, the data were collected through administering the research instrument such as matching cloze procedure test for vocabulary mastery test and short answer test for reading comprehension test. The obtained data were analyzed by using SPSS 25 version through 2 steps namely pre-requisite analysis and hypothesis testing. The hypothesis testing was conducted by applying Pearson Product Moment Correlation and T-test. Based on the finding of the analyzed data, it was found that the correlation coefficient obtained was 0.904. Additionally, the significance of the variable was 0.000 which means the significance was smaller than 0.05. In conclusion, the result of the analyzed data clearly showed that there was positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Payangan in academic year 2022/2023.
