Abstract
Speaking is one of the important and essential skills that must be continuously practiced. The results of the pre-test showed that most of the students in VIII C of SMP Sapta Andika Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 faced problems in speaking. In addition, they had difficulty in speaking fluently, comprehensively and grammatically. Moreover, the objective of this study was to know whether or not speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Sapta Andika Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through role play combined with picture. Thus, to achieve the objective of the study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research which was done in two cycles. The research instruments were administered to collect the required data. The data were then analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-tests which showed there were significant improvements of the subjects’ mean score from the pre-test to posttests. As the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered in the end of the last cycle and the results showed positive responses on the implementation of role play combined with picture. Based on the results of the pre-test, post-tests and questionnaire, it could be concluded that speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Sapta Andika Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through role play combined with picture.
