Abstract

Speaking is an activity carried out by subjects to communicate with other people. Preliminary observation showed that most seventh-grade students at SMP Wisata Sanur in academic year 2021/2022 especially in VII H class faced problems in speaking English due to limited vocabulary, inappropriate grammar, incorrect pronunciation, and fluency. In addition, they trouble expressing ideas, choosing words, and low self-esteem to speak. The objective of this research was to know whether or not speaking skills of the seventh-grade students of SMP Wisata Sanur can be improved through role-play technique with conversation scripts-based video shooting activity. Thus, to achieve the research objective, the researcher conducted classroom action research which was done in two cycles. The obtained data was analyzed quantitatively from the pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2, post-test 3, and post-test 4, then qualitatively from the questionnaire. The results showed that there were improvements in the subjects’ speaking skill. The mean score of pre-cycle was 53.17, then an improvement occurred in cycle 1 with the mean score of 66.05. The mean score of cycle 2 was higher than cycle 1 with the score of 80.03. The detailed improvements are shown by the mean score of the pre-test compared to post-tests. The mean score of the pre-test was 53.17 which is classified as poor. While the mean score of post-test 1 was 62.87. Then the improvement occurred in the mean score of post-test 2, which was 69.23, although both of the mean scores of post-test 1 and 2 were classified as poor. The mean score of post-test 3 was 76.53 which was classified as sufficient. Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test 4 was 83.53 which was classified as good. As the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered at the end of the last cycle and the results showed positive responses on the implementation of role-play technique with conversation scripts-based video shooting activity. Based on the results of the research instruments, it could be concluded that speaking skill of the seventh-grade students of SMP Wisata Sanur in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through role-play technique with conversation scripts-based video shooting activity.
