Abstract

The main problem that often occurs in the oral cavity is dental caries. One of the preventive measures against the colonization of Streptococcus mutans bacteria is by maintaining oral hygiene by brushing the teeth with the right toothpaste. There are two types of toothpaste, herbal and non-herbal toothpaste. The herbal toothpaste here is toothpaste that contains the addition of herbal ingredients such as lime, while non-herbal toothpaste is toothpaste that contains Triclosan without the addition of herbal ingredients in it. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of antibacterial effectiveness of herbal toothpaste with lime content and non-herbal toothpaste preparations against the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone. This research was an experimental laboratory research with Post Test Only Control Group research design. The sampel in this study was Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which used four (4) treatment groups: The first grup is a positive control solution with 2% Chlorhexidine gluconate, the second group is a toothpaste with lime content, the third group is a non-herbal toothpaste containing Triclosan, and the fourth groups is a negative control solution with Aquadest, 6 times in each treatment. The data analysis used normality test and homogeneity test and continued with One Way Anova test. The results showed that herbal toothpaste had an average inhibition zone of 17,16 mm, while nonherbal toothpaste had an average inhibition zone of 15,00 mm. Later on, the average of the positive control was included in the very strong category, which was 19,50 mm and the average of the negative control was 0. The results of the Mann Whitney test showed that in all toothpaste treatments there was no significant difference with the positive control, and there was a significant difference with the negative control. The conclusion of this study, is that nonherbal toothpaste and herbal toothpaste with the addition of lime can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria, but toothpaste with lime content is more effective in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria.
