Abstract
This study aims to answer two research problems in identifying the types of illocutionary acts found in the "Love, Simon" movie that are performed by the characters; and in analyzing the meaning of the illocutionary acts found in the "Love, Simon" movie based on the context that are spoken by the characters. This study used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data that occurred in the movie. The data in this research was a movie entitled "Love, Simon," which was analyzed by applying the theory proposed by Searle (1979) regarding types of illocutionary acts and the theory from Halliday and Hasan (1989) about the context of situation. The result of this analysis revealed that there are 5 types of illocutionary acts found in the "Love, Simon" movie. They are assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Based on the data, there are 50 utterances found in the movie. Expressive becomes the most frequently used by the characters in the "Love, Simon" movie. It holds 40% of the percentage and takes 20 utterances out of 50 utterances. Then the second type of illocutionary act used by the characters is directive. It consists of 16 utterances and holds 32% of the whole percentage. The third type found is assertive, with a total of around 10 utterances, or 20%. Following that, the commissive type accounts for approximately 6% of all utterances, or about 3 utterances. Finally, declarative has the lowest percentage, with 1 utterance, or about 2%.
