Abstract

This study focused on the imagery used in the novel entitled Maybe Everything. The aims of this study are to identify the types of imagery and the meaning of imagery used in the novel. There are two theories used as the guidance of the analysis in this study, namely the theory by Perrine (1974) about the types of imagery which include 7 types of imagery, specifically visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, organic, and kinesthetic imagery, and the theory by Leech (1981) about 7 types of meaning, namely conceptual, connotative, collocative, reflective, affective, social, and thematic. The results of this study showed that all of types of imagery and the types meaning of imagery were present in the novel. Based on the finding, there are a total of 115 data classified as imagery with visual imagery as the most dominant type. The study concludes that visual imagery is dominantly used in the novel to describe the world and characters visually in order to give a clear understanding of narrative, and all of the functions of imagery in the novel are related to each other which cannot be separated from one to another to make the story more vivid.
