Abstract
The aims of the study are to find out the types of figurative languages and analyzing the meanings of the figurative languages used in Maroon 5 song lyrics. The data source of this study was taken from Maroon 5 selected songs. The descriptive and qualitative method used in analyzing the data. The types of figurative languages were analyzed by the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) and also supported with the theory proposed by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of figurative language found in Maroon 5 selected songs. This study consists of 10 songs that used some type of figurative language. Therefore, it was found 7 types of figurative language, there are: simile (31.82%), metaphor (9.10%), personification (9.10%), synecdoche (13.63%), metonymy (4.54%), hyperbole (27.27%) and allusion (4.54). It can be seen that the dominant types of figurative language in Maroon 5 selected songs is simile. The meanings of figurative language found in Maroon 5 selected song are as follows: conceptual meaning (3.85%), connotative meaning (50%), affective meaning (42.3%) and reflected meaning (3.85%).
