AN ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE ILLOCUTIONARY ACT FOUND IN THE MOVIE “ HOBBS & SHAW “ BY DAVID LEITCH

This study entitled “An Analysis of Directive Illocutionary Acts found in the Movie Hobbs & Shaw by David Leitch” It aims for finding out the types of directive illocutionary acts and analyze the context of situation of directive illocutionary acts utterance expressed by the characters. The types of directive illocutionary acts are discussed using the theory of directive illocutionary acts proposed by Kreidler (1998: 189-190) and the context of situation is discussed using theory of the context of situation proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 12). The method used in analyzing data was library research by the data was taken from the utterances of the main characters in “Hobbs & Shaw” movie. In collecting the data, the first is download the movie and script from the internet, watched the movie and marked the utterances that contain directive illocutionary acts in the movie script. This study analyzed the data based on the types of directive illocutionary acts and then analyzed the context of the situation. In presenting the finding, formal and informal methods were used. Formal method was used to show the percentage of the utterances which contained directive illocutionary acts by using table, informal method was used to explain the data descriptively through words. In terms of the directive illocutionary acts there are three types of directive illocutionary acts that are expressed in which directive illocutionary acts for commands which occurred 31 times, requests 23 times and suggestions 12 times meaning the total is 66 data including the meaning with the context of situation that consists of the field, tenor and mode. In discussion at the first, there was the analysis of the context of situation such as field, tenor, and mode. The analysis of the context of situation explained the first in order to make the context of the data more clear and then it was making the analysis of the directives illocutionary acts more accurate. Afterward, there was a discussion about three types of directive illocutionary acts.
