AN ANALYSIS OF CONFLICT FACED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN EXTRACTION MOVIE DIRECTED BY SAM HARGRAVE

This study is concerned with the conflict that occurs in the movie Extraction. This study aims to analyze the types of conflict faced by the main character and to explain how the main character solves the problem in the movie Extraction. The data source of this study was the movie entitled Extraction, directed by Sam Hargrave. The data were collected by using the observation method. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data. The theory from Kenney (1966) was used to analyze the kinds of conflict faced by the main character and the theory from Deetz and Stevenson in Fleetwood (1987) was used to analyze how the main character solves the conflict. The finding was using the formal and informal methods. The researcher found there are 19 times conflicts found by Tyler Rake, the main character of the movie Extraction. Tyler Rake faced internal and external conflicts. The types of external conflict found by Tyler Rake were the conflict man vs. man which was the conflict against other characters, and these kinds of conflict was the most frequent conflict faced by the main character; the second conflict found was conflict man. vs. society, the conflict faced by Tyler against the majority of people who were involved in kidnapping Ovi, the other external conflict was when Tyler was struggling against nature, the conflict occurs when he was got stuck in the smelling sewer when he was trying to hide from being surrounded by the police when the mission takes place. While the type of internal conflict found was the conflict of the main character, Tyler Rake with himself or his mind because of feeling sadness and guilty of his son, which was died but he could not be there beside his son. For the strategies used by the main protagonist to solve the conflict that happened in the movie, the researcher found that the conflict management strategies used by Tyler Rake in facing the conflict, were avoidance, competition, pacification and creative integration strategy. The most frequent strategy used by Tyler to solve the conflict he faced, was the avoidance and competition strategy, the less frequent strategy was pacification and the last strategy used was creative integration.
