Abstract
Wawo., Skolastika Bela. 2022. An Analysis of Figurative Language Found in the Novel A Thousand Splendid Suns Written by Khaled Hosseini. English Study Program, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. Supervisor: Dr. Desak Putu Eka Pratiwi, S.S., M.Hum.; Co supervisor: Dr. Ni Wayan Suastini, S.S., M.Hum. Figurative language mostly used in fiction works such as novel to emphasize and make the story not only interesting but alive. This study aimed to identify the types of figurative language used in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini and analyze their meaning. This study uses qualitative method to conduct a clear explanation about each figurative language found. The data were taken from the novel and were identified and analyzed by using the figurative language theory from Perrine (1977) and the 7 Theory of Meaning proposed by Leech (1974) to analyze the conceptual and referred meaning. The study finds 7 (seven) types of figurative language: metaphor, simile, personification, apostrophe, symbol, paradox, and hyperbole/overstatement. Moreover, the study also analyzes two types of meaning: conceptual and connotative. From the analysis, it is concluded that from the 7 types of figurative language used in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, simile is mostly used by the writer to portray the story.
