THE ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN THE TALL GIRL MOVIE

This research deals with the study of flouting maxim in a science fiction movie entitled Tall Girl. There are two problem discussed in this study, those are what types of flouting maxims are identified in the Tall Girl movie and why are the maxims flouted by the characters in the Tall Girl movie? The purposes of this study are to find out the types of flouting maxims identified in the Tall Girl movie and to analyze the reason why the characters flouted the maxims in the Tall Girl movie. This research focuses on analyzing the types of flouting maxim and the reason why the characters in the movie flouted the maxims. There are two theories used to analyze the data in this research. First, the theory of cooperative principle proposed by Grice (1975) to analyze the type of floating maxim and the second theory from Leech (1983) to analyze the reason of the flouting maxim. The researcher used descriptive method qualitative method to describe the data to answer the problem of the study. The result of the study shows that there are 25 data of floating maxim in Tall Girl Movie. The highest occurrence of floating maxim in this movie is floating maxim of quantity 9 data (31%). Then followed by flouting maxim of relevance with 8 data (28%). Floating maxim of manner with 7 data (24%) and floating maxim of quality is the lowest occurrence of floating maxim with 5 data (17%). The reason of floating maxim consist of collaborative reason with 11 data (38%), conflictive reason with 9 (31%) data, convivial reason with 6 data (21%) and competitive reason with 3 data (10%). Conflictive reason is the highest occurrence in this study.
