Abstract
This research mainly aims at (1) finding out the types of derivational suffixes (2) describing the functions of derivational suffixes (3) analyzing the process of derivational suffixes found in the novel Little Prince. The novel The Little Prince was written by Antonie De-Saint Exupery. This novel consists of seventy-eight pages and twenty-seven chapters. It published in English and French in the US by Reynal & Hitchcock in April 1943. The research was used descriptive qualitative and quantitative method in order to find out the types of derivational suffixes and to give clear description that is related to the theories proposed by Plag (2003) which was used to discuss the types of derivational suffixes. The theory proposed by Lieber (2009) was used to discuss the functions and the last the theory by McCarthy (2002) was used to discuss the process of derivational suffixes. The result of this study shows that the types of derivational suffixes. There are four types of derivational suffixes those are nominal suffixation, verbal suffixation, adjectival suffixation and adverbial suffixation. This study found 286 data, consists of 98 data or (34%) of nominal suffixation, which were -al, -ance, -ence, -er, -or, -(e)ry, -ness, -ing, -ion, -ation, -ment, and -ity. Six (6) data or 1 % of verbal suffixation, which was –en suffix. 64 data or (23 %) of adjectival suffixation which were -able, -ible, -ive, -en, -ed, -ful, -less, and -ous. The last one was 118 data or (42 %) of adverbial suffixation, which was –ly. The frequency of each type of derivational suffixes shows that the most frequent appearance of suffixation was adverbial suffixation with the total data 118 data or (42 %) of all the derivational suffixes found in the data source. The most dominant process in analyze of the functions of derivational suffixes, those are category-changing and both category meaning changing.
