AN ANALYSIS OF MAXIM VIOLATION FOUND IN LUCA MOVIE

The title of this paper is Maxim Violation in LUCA Movie. The study concerns with the types of maxim violation and the context of the situation in the movie. The aims of this study are to find out about the types of maxim violation by using the theory of Grice (1975), and the context of situation by using the theory of Halliday and Hassan (1985). The method of the research used was the descriptive qualitative method, the data was collected by some steps: the first were by watching the movie while reading the subtitle, then reading again the script of the movie and taking a note the conversation that violated the maxim. In presenting the shows the data, this study used the formal and informal method. The result of the data, there are 23 utterances containing maxim violations found in the movie “Luca”. The most frequent data found are those data representing the violation of the maxim of quality because the characters in the movie when they do the conversation, each characters sometimes answer it by giving untruth information or lies. In this movie, context of situation used to know the intended meaning that applied in this conversation of this movie.
