AN ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS EMPLOYED BY THE CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIE RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

This study entitled An Analysis of Directive Speech Acts Employed by The Characters in The Movie Red Shoes and The Seven Dwarfs. This study aims to investigate utterances concerned about directive speech act. The focus of this study is to identify the types of directive speech acts performed by the characters in the movie and to analyze what are the functions of the directive speech acts uttered by all the characters. This analysis is based on the theory of Kreidler (1998) and Leech (1983). The method used in analyzing the data in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. There were 45 data successful found in the movie related to the type of directive speech act. Data calculation results has shown that command was the most dominant type of directive used by characters in the movie, which there were 25 data (55,6%). The second most dominant data was requests, there were 13 data (28,9%). The lowest data that found in the movie was suggestion, which there were only 7 data (15,5%). Moreover, found there were 4 functions of directive speech acts that used by characters in movie. There were competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive functions. Competitive, and convivial functions were the most common functions in the movie. Collaborative function was the third rank of function that often appeared in the movie, while conflictive was the function that appeared the least. The results of this study are expected to be useful for readers when uttering an utterance that contain directive speech acts and to understand the intention and function of an utterance.
