FLOUTING MAXIMS IN “ALITA BATTLE ANGEL“ MOVIE

This study aims to analyze the flouting maxims in Alita Battle Angel movie. In more specific terms, this study aims to identify the types of flouting maxims and find out the reason in flouting maxims performed by the characters in the movie. Flouting maxims is an important thing to consider in making communication more effective and making the sentences acceptable for the listener. There are two problems to be solved in the study, such as (1) what types of maxims are flouted by the characters in Alita Battle Angel movie? And (2) why do the characters in Alita Battle Angel movie flout the maxim?. The scope of this study focuses on analyzing the types of flouting maxim and the reason why the characters in this movie flout the maxim. The theories that used in this study are the theory from Grice (1975) and Leech (1983). The theory from Grice (1975) is use to classify the types of flouting maxims in Alita Battle Angel movie. The result of the study shows that the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 20 data. The highest occurrence in Alita Battle Angel movie is flouting maxim of relevance which is takes 10 data (50%). Then followed by flouting maxim of quantity and manner which are 4 data (20%) and the lowest is flouting maxim of quality which take only 2 data (10%). One of the main reasons for the occurrence of flouting maxims is collaboration. It appears 13 times (63%) in the movie.
