Abstract
The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative and to analyze the meaning of each figurative language found in song lyrics of Maroon 5. The theories used in this study are first theory by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) used to identify the types of figurative language, the second theory by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of each figurative language found in song lyrics of Maroon 5, in addition used the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1989) to explain the context of situation. The researcher collected the data by listening the songs, downloading the song lyrics, reading the script, underlying and classifying the data based on the type of figurative language. The result of the study showed seven types of figurative language found in song lyrics of Maroon 5 album “Jordi”, they were 5 similes (20%), 4 metaphors (16%), 2 personifications (8%), 2 synecdoche (8%), 2 metonymies (8%), 7 hyperboles (28%), and 3 ironies (12%). The researcher found two out of seven types of meanings, they were connotative meaning and affective meaning.
